Here's How You Can Help

Check our list of current Volunteer Needs and Sign-Up!

Promote Rabbits for Adoption
Download flyers from our volunteer materials page, and post in your community in pet supply or feed stores (that do not sell rabbits), coffee houses, vet offices, or anyplace that hosts a community bulletin board.

Box Hay
Be a hay elf for a few hours on Saturday mornings to pack hay for sale. Hay distributors need a roomy vehicle such as SUV or pick-up truck to haul boxed hay to our distribution locations. Garage for hay box storage could also be helpful.

For East County Hay Packing contact: Lisa (lisalisansd@yahoo.com) or Tina (sdbunny13@aol.com)

For North County Hay Packing contact: Cindy (cindyvestyck@yahoo.com)

Vet Transport
Take shelter rabbits to and from veterinary visits in general geographic area of the shelter. This is typically shelters in the North County.

Shelter Volunteer
Clean cages, provide fresh food and water, socialize and exercise rabbits, evaluate personality for adoption blurbs, be alert for medical/social problems.

We are short-handed at the following shelters and can use your help!  Contact volunteer@sandiegorabbits.org for more information.

Our presence in the local shelters makes a huge difference to rabbits who might otherwise be euthanized due to lack of space or experienced rabbit caretakers. You really can make a difference!

Volunteer Opportunities for Kids
Kids, become a volunteer with the SNAP Dragons, and be part of helping animals in San Diego County.

Become a Sanctuary Home
Permanent homes are needed for "sanctuary" status rabbits. Rabbits in sanctuary care need caretakers with rabbit experience. These rabbits may have challenging attitudes or on-going medical concerns, making them difficult to adopt into permanent homes. HRS covers most medical costs and supplies (cage, hay, etc.) to approved sanctuary homes. You provide the love and care, throughout the bunnies' lives. Application and home inspection is required. Contact HRS at 619-718-7777 or email hrs@sandiegorabbits.org to apply for sanctuary status, and to give one of these homeless bunnies a loving place to live throughout the remainder of its life.

Education events
One of the House Rabbit Society's key goals and responsibilities is to educate the public on responsible rabbit care.  This includes information on housing pet rabbits indoors, litterbox training, behavior, health issues, and more.  Participate at educational events to help us better the lives of companion rabbits.  Events included Earth Day, environmental fairs, info tables at pet stores, the San Diego Fair, and more.  If you would like to help at educational events, please contact Patricia at education@sandiegorabbits.org

Special Events
Helpers needed to organize and staff special events such as our Open House in the spring, Bunnyfest in September and the December holiday party. Contact hrs@sandiegorabbits.org

Newsletter
Write articles about your rabbit experiences or send photos. Submissions accepted throughout the year. Contact our Newsletter co-Editors, Alison (rabbitnews@alisongiese.com) or Chandra (chandra@chandrabeal.com).

For more info on these and other volunteer opportunities, e-mail volunteer@sandiegorabbits.org.

Volunteer meetings are held as needed and usually planned around specific events (Open House, Bunnyfest, Holiday Party, etc.) Check our Events Calendar to determine meeting dates and times. Contact us at any time, to inquire about current volunteer opportunities, or visit Volunteer Needs.
