HRS Foster Rabbits for Adoption

San Diego House Rabbit Society has many wonderful rabbits available for adoption; in all sizes, colors, and breeds! Each one of these rabbits has been spayed or neutered, litter box trained, and cared for in the home of their HRS foster parent.

Whether you are looking for one bunny, a pair, or a companion for your current rabbit, we will likely have a rabbit that is perfect for you!  Our next scheduled adoption day is Sunday, Aug 22. Please be sure to contact us well in advance of the adoption day, so we can help you find the most appropriate rabbit for you. If you cannot make the adoption day, we will try to work with you to arrange a meeting at another time.

Please complete our Adoption Application Form if you are interested in adopting.  If you do not hear back from us within 48 hours, please send an email to adopt@sandiegorabbits.org to ensure we received your application.

NOTE:  Be sure to read our adoption guidelines for adoption fees, screening requirements, and more helpful information.

Bunnies waiting "forever" for new homes.  HRS is a safe place for rabbits where they never have the fear of being euthanized due to lack of space, or medical or behavioral issues.  However, adoptions have been really slow this year and many of our rabbits have been waiting a long time for a new home of their own.  We have included information in their descriptions that tells how long they've been waiting for someone to open their heart to them and give them a loving "forever" home. Maybe your family can be the one to end their wait?

Are you visiting our website in order to adopt a rabbit, but you are NOT located in Southern California? If so, please visit the National HRS website to find an HRS Chapter near you!

This heart symbol denotes a 'special needs' bunny. These rabbits have health, behavioral, age or physical conditions that require a bit of adjustment on the part of their new home.  Please - open your heart to our special needs bunnies and help them live 'happily ever after.'

This sunflower symbol denotes bunnies who are "easy keepers."  These bunnies are good for families, easy to care for, and have shown no difficult habits while in foster care.

Note: Not all HRS foster rabbits may be posted here, so let us know what you are looking for. Thank you for choosing to adopt through HRS. We will help you find just the right rabbit!

Rabbits marked "adoption pending" have been adopted and are going through a 'bonding period' with their new rabbit companion.

Little Oscar the Grouch has a good reason for being mad.
Some vicious person left him in a trash can!  Oscar was found by a good Samaritan who took him home and tried to clean him up and find him a safe place to go.  This fuzzy little guy is a Lion Head about 3yrs old. He's sweet and quiet and not too mad, after all.  I guess he's forgiven the thoughtless human who left him there.  Oscar has been neutered and is refining his litter box skills. He loves his fresh greens and hay and is an easy boy to handle.  We think he would be a great companion to a nice bunny girl and deserves a home that is stable and will care for him - for life.  Note:  Because Oscar has longer fur, he'll need regular combing to prevent matting of his fur.

Miss Dixie is a little sweetie looking for affection.  This little bun girl is a sweet and shy dwarf bunny.  She came to us a real mess; her teeth were maloccluded and she could barely eat. Her fur was dirty and she was covered in fleas.  Poor, poor baby.  It was so sad.  Now Miss Dixie is beautiful and healthy and ready for her new home.  We had Dixie's front teeth pulled so that she can now eat. You just have to chop up her "hard" veggies so she can pick them up with her lips.  Dixie is very small so not suitable to a home with very young children.  She might enjoy a bunny boyfriend or an adult family who adores her. We believe Dixie is just under one year old.

Holly is a mature bunny girl looking for a loving bunny companion. Pretty Holly came from a local shelter where she was very unhappy with her environment.  We took Holly into foster care and have been giving her the TLC she so desperately needs.  We've tried her with bunny boys and it's clear she really wants a bunny companion; she could do well as a single bun if she gets lots of attention and plenty of "out of cage" time with you.  She's tidy with her cage, thankful for gentle attention and nice petting sessions.   Holly is about 3 years old and would do best in her new home with a more open x-pen setup rather than a cage.  Do you have a bunny boy looking for love?  Alternatively, if you have a situation where you are home a lot and can give her a lot of attention, Holly can be a little love.

Buster is a tiny Lion Head boy who would appreciate a loving, permanent home.  Poor Buster came from a petting zoo where he was not well cared-for.  His fur was dirty and matted, he was thin, and you could tell he'd been living a "rough" life in a cage outdoors.  This little guy is active, fun and enjoys attention.  He's a bit scared about being picked up, but is comfortable once you've got him safely in your arms.  He's very small so not suited to a home with very small children who want to hold him all the time.  He has a tendency to kick and want to get away.  Buster is good with his litter box and loves his fresh hay and veggies.  He might love a bunny girlfriend or to be your special companion.  We think Buster is about 2 or 3 years old.

Single, Gorgeous Girl In Search of Quiet, Loving Home!
Turtle
is a 3 year old Rex girl with a sweet, serene, loving personality. While Rex rabbits are known for their soft, velvety fur, Turtle’s fur is like SILK. She enjoys being held and petted, and will even give soft bunny kisses from time to time. Turtle’s foster family reports that she adds “grace and beauty” to their home, but she does get nervous around small children. We believe Turtle will be happiest in a home with adults or quieter children.  Turtle is also used to living in an x-pen setting so she has plenty of room to do important bunny tasks like napping, stretching out, and playing with toys and her Cottontail Cottage.

Otter is a handsome boy, looking for his lady love.  This handsome lop mix boy is 4 years old and recently lost his bunny companion - along with his home.  It's so sad...  He is handling it well, though, and does his best to enjoy each day that comes.  We know, however, that Otter would like to have another bunny girl to love.  This sweet boy is easy to handle, friendly, and would do great in most any home.  He's good with his litter box and enjoys playing with toys.  He might also do well in a home where he gets a lot of attention.  He doesn't mind being held and he's fairly easy to handle.

Little girl, Peaches, needs a very experienced home.  This pretty little girl has some special needs that can only be met by an experienced bunny home (or someone who has cared for special needs animals).  Peaches is a young dwarf girl, blind in one eye and very cage protective because she cannot see well.  Once you learn how to approach her she loves attention and will sit with you for petting for a long, long time!  Peaches is litter box trained but still refining her skills.  She keeps wanting to use both corners of her cage.  Her foster home is working with her to help her get more comfortable about being approached, and better at using her litter box.  Peaches might do well as a companion to a bunny boy and that could help her feel more secure.  Peaches is not appropriate for a family with very young children as she will bite if she gets scared.  Do you have the experienced home that is right for Peaches?

Jackson and Nina are a sweet pair hoping for a new family. These two bunnies are 3 years old and have never had their own home.  They were born in foster care and are still waiting for a family to love them.  They are gentle and sweet, and fun loving at play time.  They would make great family bunnies to hang out with the kids and help do homework.  They might be especially well suited to a home school situation where they can be a part of the daily activity.  Please consider opening your heart and home to Nina and Jackson.

See Nina & Jackson on You Tube

Pretty girl, Alexi, needs a bunny-experienced home that enjoys her active nature.  Alexi has been waiting 3 years for a new home! This pretty Dutch girl is 3˝ years old, active and sweet. She does not do well in a cage, and requires an x-pen setting in her new home.  Alexi can be protective of her space but once she knows that you will be gentle and give her some pets (and a papaya treat!) she is willing to let you in her area. She will be fine with an experienced bunny home but might be too confident for children under 12 yrs. Alexi loves her run time and playing with toys, and she's also very good with her litter box.  Alexi would likely do well with cats and gentle dogs.

Charlie and Lorne Doone are a sweet bonded pair who've fallen on hard times.  These poor bunnies recently lost their home and instead of being returned to HRS, were left at a shelter.  Thank goodness we have great relationships with our area shelters; they called us to let us know that our adopted bunnies had come in there.  Sadly, we don't really know why the bunnies were given up but we think the family may have lost their home. It's a story we're hearing all too often.  Lorna Doone is about 2 1/2 years old and we think Charlie is about 5 years.  Both are in great shape although Lorna could stand to lose a little weight.  These two bunnies would do best in a home with adults or older children. They are gentle and sweet and will make nice family bunnies.

Pretty Snuggles is finally ready for her new home.  This pretty "Maybelline" bunny came to HRS severely obese and protective of her cage which made shelter living very difficult for her.  A few months later she's now much slimmer and healthy, and has a sweet personality.  She's very neat and tidy in her cage and loves her hay and fresh veggies.  We think Snuggles would enjoy a bunny boy companion and a family that will give her lots of gentle attention.  Snuggles is best suited to an adult home or one with gentle, older children.

BB and Freckles are brother & sister, looking for their forever home. They have been waiting one year for a home. These youngsters are 1 year old and siblings from a litter of nine babies.  These two adore each other and must be adopted together.  BB & Freckles are easygoing, active kids who will do well with a family with children.  They enjoy petting and playing, and don't mind being held but will let you know when they've had enough.  They need an x-pen housing setup, same as the one they have in their foster home.  Youngsters their age are more active and will need plenty of play time (out of their living area), plus toys and boxes to toss & chew.  If you'd like a younger pair of bunnies, these two will be a lot of fun for your family.

Little Brett is a cute dwarf boy with some big attitude!  This little stinker is about 1 year old and waiting for an experienced home.  He's perfect for those who love "dwarfitude" in their bunnies.  He hates being picked up but will interact with you on the floor.  Brett is fun but not suited to children. He needs an adult home.  He might like a mellow bunny girlfriend, or to just be on his own for awhile and get all the attention.

Pretty Nutmeg is a darling bunny girl hoping for a caring new home.  This poor little girl was left behind when her military family got new orders and moved to another state.  It's so sad that they did not move her with them; rabbits travel very well!  Now she's with us and looking for her "forever" home; someone who will consider her "part of the family" and ensure she stays with them throughout her entire life. Pretty Nutmeg is 2 years old, friendly, sweet, and very tidy in her living space.  She does very well in our recommended x-pen housing.  She enjoys attention and petting though she's a bit nervous about being held.  Nutmeg is a smaller Silver Marten girl with beautiful coloring.  She would do well with a quiet family of adults or one with older, gentle children.  She might also like a bunny boy companion.

Nathan and his companion Suzie Q, are two of the funniest, most active and just darned CUTE bunnies we've ever fostered for adoption.  They have been waiting for a home for 3 years. We don't understand why they are still waiting for their 'forever home.'   Nathan (right) is a "tripod" bunny because he is missing his left rear leg. And, Suzie has NO WHISKERS!  Yup, no whiskers.  Oh well...  Neither issue makes any difference to these two cuties.  They enjoy life to the fullest.  They love to run, play, dig, and chew on their cardboard boxes and grass balls.  They especially love their "Ton of Bun Fun" tunnel!  Because of Nathan's missing leg, they must be housed on the floor with a rug or carpet. They have an x-pen setting in their foster home and this is what they will require with their adoptive family. A cage will not work for them.  Nathan & Suzie are best suited to a home where they will get a lot of attention and several hours of "out of pen" time each day. Note: Nathan is afraid of dogs so he and Suzie are best suited to a home where they don't have to share a living area with dogs.

Baby is still searching for his "forever" home.  This sweet Rex boy is hoping the FOURTH time is a charm.  Yes - the fourth time.  Poor Baby keeps getting shuttled around through no fault of his own.  First he was an Easter Bunny who got dumped when they got bored, then he had a falling out with his companion and was found a new home, then he got adopted but his family had to move unexpectedly and could not take him along.  This bunny boy needs his "forever" home!  Baby is a mini-rex male about 3 1/2 to 4 years old.  He's super friendly, great as a free run bunny and well-trained to his litter box.  He's fine with well-behaved dogs and would probably do okay with cats.  He would love a stable adult home where he is the cherished child.  He will return your kindness with unconditional love.

Molly & Skipper are two adorable tiny bunnies.  These cuties are a sweet bonded pair of dwarf rabbits who adore each other.  Skipper (right) is the more confident of the pair and takes good care of his girl, Molly (left).  Skipper is about 1 1/2 years old and Molly about 2 1/2.  They are active, curious, funny and sweet.  They are not used to dogs or cats but do live around other rabbits.  Because they are so small and delicate, Molly & Skipper are NOT suitable to a home with small children.  They are best suited to an adult home (they have never lived with children) or one with older, rabbit-experienced children over 12 years old.  We are also looking for an experienced rabbit family that is very stable.

Grease is the word.  And that word means "cuteness!"  This handsome youngster is full of energy, fun, and silliness.  Grease is a little guy who was found underneath a car in a parking lot and had a swipe of grease down his nose.  He's been fostered with many other species of animals, and children too.  Grease is good with his litter box, social and friendly.  He would make a great family bunny if you're looking for a young, active rabbit companion.  Grease is about 1 year old and will do fine in a large cage or our recommended x-pen setup. Be sure to give him lots of toys; he loves to play!

Blossom and Berry are a devoted pair of bunny girls. Blossom & Berry have been waiting over 2 years for a new home! They are adorable together and really depend on each other for companionship.  Blossom, on the left, is a standard/Dutch mix with Harlequin coloring, while Berry is a Dutch/Dwarf mix.   Blossom has beautiful light blue eyes, and Berry's eyes are "half and half" - half brown and half blue.  Very unusual!  Both girls are good with their litter box and enjoy fresh veggies and lots of good grass hay.  They would do best in an adult home, or one with older children (over 10) who have bunny experience.  They should be fine with kitties or gentle dogs.  They will need an x-pen setting rather than a cage, as Berry can be a bit "protective" of her space and does not do as well in a cage. Berry also has been known to nip at small children who get too excitable, so she really needs a home with older children or those who are bunny-experienced.

Patty is a lovely, sweet girl who will make a wonderful family bunny.  Patty LOVES children!  She will play with them, follow them around and sit on the sofa to watch TV.  This is what we were told by the last family that gave her up.   So why can't she find a permanent home?  We think it's because her past adopters have not really done their homework before adopting.  They've loved her but had to give her up because they were allergic or found a rabbit to require too much care.  Please, won't you think about giving this lovely girl the FOREVER home she deserves? She has been waiting over 4 years for a permanent home. Patty is about 5 years old and still has a long life ahead of her; please give her the loving home she needs.

Diva is an adorable girl who needs a bunny-experienced home.  This pretty dwarf girl is about 4 years old. She has been waiting for a new home for 2 years. Diva is used to doing her own thing but does enjoy petting and a cuddle or two - on her own schedule.  She is a good choice for a family experienced with the dwarf bunny personality.  Diva is not a biter but she does want things on her own terms. She had a companion in the past but hasn't liked anyone we've tried her with in the past year.  We think she's wanting to be a single girl and run the show on her own!  Diva is not suited to a home with small children; she is too small (and easily hurt) and will not tolerate being held much.

Sweetie is a beautiful bunny girl who is a bit shy but hopeful for her very own family.  This pretty girl came to us from the Missouri "Stone County" cruelty case where more than 100 New Zealand White bunnies were abandoned by a breeder.  About 18 months old, Sweetie was rescued along with the others and came, with 13 other bunnies, out to California to be cared for by San Diego HRS.  Sweetie is definitely shy, but she LOVES to be cuddled and will sit in your lap quietly for some time.  She is more comfortable with adults but could be okay with quiet, gentle children who will interact with her on the floor.  She loves her fresh greens and dances happily about during her exercise time.  If you have a quiet home for Sweetie, please contact us to learn more.

Pretty Melody is looking for some bunny to love.  This pretty 1 year-old girl was one of a litter of 9 babies, and she's missing her siblings.  She is hoping to find a home where she can be paired with a sweet bunny boy or a family who will give her their undivided attention. Melody is sweet, social and enjoys attention.  She has been spayed and is good with her litter box. Melody is best suited to an adult home or one with gentle, well-behaved children.  She is used to an x-pen setup and will need that in her new home.

Mikey is a little boy enjoys attention and is looking for a wonderful new home.  Mikey started out pretty shy when he came to see us, but he's much better now. He's active and sweet has gotten good with his litter box. He enjoys his playtime and likes to jump up onto and hide under his cardboard box.  He has a stuffed bunny friend that he also snuggles with.  Mikey would do best in an adult home or one with older children who will enjoy watching him play and not try to pick him up too much. He might also enjoy the company of a sweet bunny girlfriend.

Foster Rabbits Who Have Been Adopted

Little Jeffrey is a sweet, fuzzy love bun.
This darling boy is about 6 months old.  A French Angora, Jeffrey normally has very long fur.  We cut it short to remove mats and to keep him cool for the summer.  Jeffrey is super sweet and enjoys attention.  He did live with other bunnies at one point and might enjoy a girlfriend to keep him company.  He's easy going and a super little guy who needs an attentive new home.  Note:  Because Jeffrey is a long-haired rabbit, his new family will need to comb him out about twice a week to prevent matting.  An alternative is to keep his fur trimmed short, like you see it now.  Much less combing is required.
** ADOPTED 8.8.10 **  See my Happy Adoption photo!

Forest is a friendly boy who needs a family who will commit to him for his entire lifetime.  We are looking for a very stable family for Forest. This handsome boy was left on our doorstep. Literally.  We arrived to the bunny store one day to find this bunny boy sitting alone in a small cage, next to our door. Luckily we'd just had an adoption or he would have gone to the shelter. Forest is about 3 years old and has pretty chocolate-brown spots.  We took him and got him neutered, which drastically improved his litter box skills.  He's an otherwise darling boy who LOVES attention; petting, snuggling, holding and is super playful.  If you will be committed to Forest, and not "dump" him after a year or two, please contact us to learn more.  This handsome, sweet boy needs a "forever" home. He'll do great with an adult family or one with well-behaved children (over 7 yrs old).

Chico is a sweet little guy who needs a quiet and loving home.  This little guy is about 10 months old, sweet and shy.  He was previously housed with his two brothers but they were transferred to another adoption location so he's on his own.  He might like to be a companion to your sweet bunny girl, or maybe even a boy bunny who is used to having 'guy' friends.  Chico is neutered and getting better with his litter box skills.  When you hold him in your lap, he will snuggle and give you kisses.  Beware, though, once he matures and is not so shy, he may not be a "lap bunny" for long.  Most bunnies get more assertive as they mature and become more confident.  Chico would like an x-pen setting in his new home so he'll have plenty of room to stretch out and play when you are not at home to give him attention.

** ADOPTED 6.20.10 **  See my Happy Adoption photo!

Pretty girl, Angelina Ballerina, needs a home where she will get plenty of hands-on care.  This pretty Angora girl is about 1 year old and sweet as can be.  She's a gentle girl who will make a wonderful family companion and maybe a good friend to your bunny boy.  We've marked Angelina as "special needs" because her new family must be sure to comb out her fur several times each week to prevent matting.  Poor Angelina's fur became very matted at the shelter so we had to cut it off.  She came into the shelter that way too, so it's clear that she needs a devoted human who will follow-through on her care and get her combed out regularly.  If you can't do it yourself, then you'll need to send her to one of our experienced volunteers who provides this service at their home.  Angelina is great with her litter box and loves her fresh hay and greens.  She will need a nice x-pen house in her new home.  She is a playful girl who enjoys attention and love from her human friends.   ** ADOPTED 6.18.10 **  See my Happy Adoption photo!

Handsome boy, Aspen, is one of our all-time sweetest bunny boys!  Aspen has been waiting 1 year for a new home. This handsome big NZW bunny came to HRS from the "Stone County" cruelty case in Missouri.  Contrary to what you might expect, Aspen loves people.  He is shy and a bit scared in new situations, but he ADORES being petted, snuggled, and given nose kisses.  He's also very playful and loves to carry his bell toy in his mouth and dance around his pen. This big boy will need an x-pen setup to have enough room in his new home. Aspen is best suited to a quiet adult home or one with gentle, well-behaved children.

Lola aka "Lady Gaga," is a princess of a girl who knows she's special and is looking for a family who will appreciate her unique beauty.  This pretty dwarf Hotot girl is about 1 year old and adorable. She's friendly but high-spirited, and really enjoys attention.  She loves her play time where she can zoom around and be very active.  Lola is a great little bunny who would do well with an adult family or one with older, bunny experienced children. She is quite small and very delicate, therefore not a good choice for a home with small children.  She might like a little boy companion that she can boss around.   ** ADOPTED 6.6.10 **  See my Happy Adoption photo!

Mica is a darling boy who enjoys attention.  This little guy is a dwarf mix bunny with the prettiest silver fur.  He's about 8 months old and has been neutered.  His litter box skills are great and he does very well in our recommended x-pen housing setup.  Mica is gentle, sweet and friendly, and will do well with a family who is careful and gentle with him.  He is very small and delicate, so is best matched to a family that has bunny experience and no really young children.  Mica might also like to meet a sweet bunny girl.
** ADOPTED 6.12.10 **  See my Happy Adoption photo!

Cutie pie, Frank, is a little Lion head boy who needs a secure home. This little guy was found running around a housing area and hanging out under a patio table for several days.  We don't know if he escaped from someone's yard or was let go, but he's VERY LUCKY that he's still with us; the neighborhood has a lot of coyotes.  Frank is about 5 months old and still a bit of a squirmy youngster.  He's super friendly and active, but does not like to be held.  He has been neutered and is getting pretty good with his litter box; still needs refinement, but not bad.  Because Frank will climb an x-pen or dig underneath, we recommend the two following rules: 1) Never put him outside without being right there with him as he can dig out of your yard in a flash! and, 2) Give him a roomy condo cage for a house so he has multiple levels to run up and down and plenty of toys. Frank is a super active guy so he needs a family who is prepared for his level of energy and will keep a close eye on him.  Keep him well secured and bunny proof your home.  Youngsters of this age are full of mischief!  All that being said, Frank is a really nice bunny boy who will make a fun, family companion.

Skyler is a handsome little guy who needs an experienced bunny home.  Skyler has been waiting almost 3 years for a new home! This little bun boy is a smaller bunny, about 3˝ years old. Skyler is housed in an x-pen setup where he kicks out his legs to relax, and enjoys being pet. Skyler loves hay and fresh veggies and running around his pen. He would do best in a rabbit-experienced adult home, but is not a good choice for small children. He would also be a good companion choice for a gentle bunny girl.  If you're an experienced bunny home Skyler would benefit from your love. Did we mention that he's perfect with his litter box?

These two cuties are Apollo and Ajax, a pair of Himalayan boys. Apollo (lighter colored boy) and Ajax are two bonded brothers that are active, funny and sweet. These bunny boys have been neutered and are about 6 months old. They are still perfecting their litter box skills, but on the way to getting better  Apollo and Ajax love to play, dance, and run around.  Their new home will need to give them lots of attention and play time out of their pen; at least 4 hours a day, to ensure they get enough exercise.   They enjoy playing with toys, running laps in the bunny room, and showing off with silly antics for their humans.  They would be a great addition to a family who wants young and active bunnies.   ** ADOPTED 6.5.10 **  See our Happy Adoption photo!

Abby is a sweet bunny girl who's had a tough beginning. Two years ago she was found outside a motel in Pacific Beach, then brought to a shelter. After that she was adopted to a new home and then they gave her away to someone else, who then "dumped" her again and one of our volunteers found her.  Poor baby; no bunny deserves to be treated like that.  We learned through her microchip records that Abby is 4 years old and spayed.  She's very good with her litter box and is currently living in an x-pen setup which she would need in her new home. She might even be a good "free run" bunny if you bunny proof your home in advance.  Abby loves to cuddle and needs a home where she will get a LOT of attention.  We will be interviewing carefully, as we want Abby to go to a very stable family that will give her a 'forever' home and a wonderful life.  No more 'living on the streets' for Abby!  ** ADOPTED 6.12.10 **  See my Happy Adoption photo!
