The County of San
Diego Department of Animal Services in partnership with the San
Diego House Rabbit Society is holding an adoption event this coming
Saturday for rabbits seized as a result of an investigation into
animal cruelty. The two organizations are working together to find
these rabbits new homes and to educate adopters on the proper care
of rabbits.
The Department
seized a total of thirty-one rabbits after Animal Control Officers
found a variety of animals living in extremely unsanitary
conditions. The majority of the rabbits were left to roam the house
and had to eat food that other animals had defecated and urinated
on. Several of the rabbits were also pregnant and have since given
birth, thus increasing the number of rabbits being held at the
shelter.
All of the rabbits
that are available for adoption are friendly, social pets that would
make a good family companion. The rabbits have all been spayed or
neutered and are trained to use a litter box. “People don’t realize
what great companions rabbits can make. They are especially
wonderful for apartments or condos as they virtually make no noise”
said the Department’s director, Dawn Danielson.
The adoption event
will be held on Saturday August 30th from 12:00 noon to
4:00 p.m. at the House Rabbit Society Adoption Center located at
4805 Mercury Street, Suite C, San Diego, CA 92111 (at the corner of
Mercury and Ronson Road). Supplies will be available for purchase
at the adoption event (cash or check only).
