  Diverting the Digger

Do you sometimes think your bunny is trying to find Mr. McGregor's garden right under your carpet? Give this inveterate digger an authorized place to dig. A cardboard box filled with shredded newspaper and perhaps a handful of hay will become a glorious place to jump in, hide, dig and chew.

Cardboard is good because bunny can gnaw on the box itself, but if used as an alternate potty, it may get too nasty smelling. In that case, substitute a large plastic litter tray. Make sure the box is deep enough to hold lots of shredded paper (about 6") but not too deep for bunny to jump in easily.

For starters, put the digging box in the area where your rabbit likes to dig, then later when he gets the idea, you can move it to the corner of the kitchen or den. Dump the contents as they become soiled or eaten; always keep it clean and inviting.

For the rabbit who always has to be chewing something, put out untreated wicker baskets filled with old magazines and phone books, the dependable toilet paper roll, cardboard egg cartons and other chewables. When bunny starts to chew your upholstery, redirect that energy to the basket.
