What is the first step in becoming a volunteer?

All potential volunteers must submit an application via Better Impact, which is our online volunteer tracking program.  Once your volunteer application has been received, you will be invited to attend a Volunteer Information Session.

What is the minimum age to volunteer?

For most positions, the minimum age to volunteer is 16.  Volunteers between the age of 16 and 18 will be required to have a parent or guardian on-site for the entirety of their shift.  Parents will also be required to complete a parental consent form.

What is the time commitment needed to become a volunteer?

The minimum commitment to volunteer with our program is 4 hours each month for 6 months, for a minimum of 24 hours.

Is there a time to talk about my specific interests and schedule?

Yes. Once a potential volunteer has taken the Volunteer Information Class, they will be contacted by our Volunteer team to set up a one-on-one interview.  Once the interview has been completed, we will forward your application to the appropriate Department Manager, who will contact you directly once an appropriate volunteer position comes available.

After attending Orientation and an interview, am I guaranteed a volunteer position?

Not automatically. Generally, we accept most of the applicants who apply for the program. However, we cannot guarantee a spot for every individual. At different times throughout the year, we may have more applicants than positions available. Sometimes an applicant’s availability may not meet the time frame of the program. Additionally, for some of our programs, applicants must have specific animal experience to be qualified for that opening.

Are there specific qualifications for the volunteer positions?

Yes and No. We have a wide variety of volunteer positions and openings. Some require existing experience, and others have training provided at the Shelter. The qualifications and experience needed will be reviewed at Orientation.

How can I sign up for the Volunteer Information Sessions?

Volunteer Information sessions are held on a bi-monthly basis.  Potential volunteers can review the schedule and sign up here.

If accepted, when do I start and what is the training schedule?

If accepted, training dates and volunteer schedules are usually assigned within the same month. Each Department will have a specific training date and schedule. Some Departments have group training, and others conduct one-on-one training. Group training dates will be announced at Orientation.

Where are the orientations conducted?

Orientations will be conducted at San Diego House Rabbit Society, which is located at 4807 Mercury Street, Suite A, San Diego, CA, 92111

Does San Diego House Rabbit Society offer court-ordered community service?

Unfortunately, San Diego House Rabbit Society is not able to verify any hours for court-ordered community service. Please contact the court for a list of participating non-profit organizations to verify your hours.
