Guidelines for Adoption

  • All rabbits adopted out by San Diego House Rabbit Society (SDHRS) must be housed indoors.

  • Our minimum requirement for housing a rabbit adopted from SDHRS is a 4’x4’ X-pen (minimum height of 30”) Please note: this is the minimum space for one bunny even with access to a larger out to play area. Two or more rabbits or larger rabbits will require a minimum of a 4’ x 8’ X-pen (minimum height of 30”) even if you plan on having your rabbit free-roam and/or a separate out to play area. Pen extender can be added and Pen lid.

  • Large litter box.

  • Paper-based or wood pellet litter (such as Carefresh) paper or wood

  • Large box of grass hay (Timothy, Orchard, or mixed)

  • Small food bowl

  • Large (7.5”) ceramic water crock

  • Hidey box with at least two openings for entrance/exit such as a  Cottontail Cottage or the Kissing Booth or gable house.

  • Non-slippery flooring such as carpet squares, area rug, towels, or blankets.

  • Timothy hay-based pellets.  Because our rabbits are on the Oxbow Essentials Adult Rabbit Food, we ask our adopters to purchase this food for the bunnies, even if they want to TRANSITION the bunny to another food.

  • Leafy green vegetables

  • Bunny-safe toys

  • Hard-sided carrier with non-slip pad in bottom

  • Rescue” or other disinfectant effective against RHDV2 (Disinfect living and exercise spaces before setting up x-pen and supplies) - Please remember to disinfect all areas bunny will be in with this disinfectant before bringing bunny home.

Examples of approved housing

* Please do not purchase anything for the rabbit until after you meet with an adoption counselor. The supplies above are what we will require you to purchase to gain approval for adoption.

** The closer you get to the list above, the faster the adoption process will go.
